Three Kuruman firefighters killed in tragic crash while responding to emergency, Ga-Segonyana
Three firefighters from the Ga-Segonyana Local Municipality’s Fire and Disaster Unit died after a municipal fire truck was involved in a fatal road accident while responding to a veld fire emergency. Baleseng Masilo, Obakeng Thakadu and Tshepo Mokhutsane, tragically lost their lives on 12 June 2026, when their fire truck collided with a stationary bus. According to the municipality, the crash involved a bus, the municipal fire truck and a vehicle belonging to Kurara FM. The incident occurred while they were enroute to attend to a veldfire along TM Tlhabane Road, which connects Seodin and Mothibistad.
The three firefighters were declared dead following the collision, sending shockwaves through the local community and emergency services fraternity. The municipality has expressed its condolences to the families, friends and colleagues of the deceased, describing the loss as a devastating tragedy. “This heart-breaking loss has sent shockwaves throughout the municipality and the broader community. The deceased officials were dedicated public servants who selflessly committed their lives to protecting communities, property and the environment from emergencies and disasters,” said Martin Tsatsimpe, municipal manager.
“On behalf of the Municipal Council, management and all officials of the Ga-Segonyana Local Municipality, we extend our deepest and most sincere condolences to the families, friends, colleagues and loved ones of the deceased. Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this difficult and painful time. The municipality also extends its sympathies to all individuals affected by the accident and wishes those who sustained injuries a speedy recovery. As we mourn this tragic loss, we honour the courage, dedication and service of our fallen firefighters, who made the ultimate sacrifice while carrying out their duty to serve and protect the people of Ga-Segonyana.”

Major fire at hazardous materials facility triggers large emergency response, Melbourne, Australia
A significant industrial fire at the Envirostor hazardous materials facility in Melbourne’s northern industrial suburb of Campbellfield prompted a major emergency response overnight, drawing firefighters, police, ambulance crews and specialist hazardous-materials personnel to the scene on Tuesday, 9 June 2026. The incident occurred at the Envirostore site operated by DGL Group, a company specialising in chemical logistics, storage, recycling and hazardous-material management. Emergency services were alerted after fire broke out within the facility, sending smoke into the surrounding area and raising concerns about the potential risks associated with chemicals stored on-site.

Double boost for Rheenendal: New fire engines handed over and e-Centre unveiled, Knysna
On 10 June 2026, the Western Cape Government, in partnership with the Knysna Municipality, officially handed over two brand-new fire trucks to the local disaster management and firefighting teams in Rheenendal in Knysna. The two milestones mark a significant investment in both digital access and public safety. The fire engines were required through funding by the Western Cape Provincial Capacity Grant and will be stationed in Rheenendal to strengthen local emergency response capacity and ensure that fire and rescue services are available closer to the community.
Family left without shelter as fire consumes their home, Ekurhuleni
A multiple roomed house in Primrose suffered an extensive damage as fire ravaged through the entire structure leaving the family without shelter on Friday, 12 June 2026. City’s Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) firefighters responded to 83 Churchill Avenue Primrose after the reception of the call. On arrival, the entire rooftop had already collapsed, flames covering the all seven rooms threatening to spread to the backyard structures. Crews responded from Primrose and Bedfordview fire stations respectively.
Third body recovered after Toyota Hilux plunged into river in Addo, Eastern Cape
On June 7, 2026, the South African Police Service (SAPS) Search and Rescue and the Sundays River Valley Local Municipality teams recovered the body of a 35-year-old man from the Coerney River in Addo, Eastern Cape. This brought the tragic death toll to three following a vehicle accident. The incident originally occurred on June 6, 2026, when a white Toyota Hilux bakkie carrying five Zimbabwean nationals attempted to cross a low-water bridge on Slagboom Road. The strong river currents swept the vehicle off the bridge.

Fire stations of the world: Christchurch City Fire Station, New Zealand
Fire and Emergency New Zealand celebrated significant work being completed in its post-earthquake reconstruction programme in Christchurch, officially opening both the flagship Christchurch City Fire Station and the Sumner Fire Station in May 2023. Both stations were built on existing sites following the demolition of the original stations that were extensively damaged in the earthquake sequence of 2010-11. Most of the funding for both rebuilds came from the Government’s COVID Response and Recovery Fund.
