Overberg District Municipality hosts successful International Firefighters’ Day 2026 event ‬‬‬

The Overberg District Municipality (ODM) successfully hosted its International Firefighters’ Day (IFFD) 2026 event at NAMPO Park on 9 May 2026, bringing together firefighters, emergency personnel, government representatives, stakeholders, exhibitors and members of the public in celebration of the firefighting profession.

The event served as an opportunity to honour the bravery, sacrifice and dedication of firefighters who continue to protect communities under challenging and often dangerous conditions. It also provided a platform to strengthen public awareness around fire safety, disaster preparedness and community resilience.

The programme included firefighter team challenges, emergency response demonstrations, public engagement activities, exhibitor displays, food stalls and ceremonial proceedings. One of the most significant moments of the day was the ceremonial ringing of the bell in remembrance of firefighters who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

The municipality welcomed several dignitaries and stakeholders to the event, including Minister Ivan Meyer and Minister Tertuis Simmers. During the event, Minister Simmers officially handed over two trucks, including an 11 000-litre water tanker vehicle, to the Overberg District Municipality to further strengthen firefighting, disaster response and service delivery capacity within the region.

ODM extends its sincere gratitude to all firefighter teams, partnering departments, sponsors, exhibitors, food vendors, emergency services personnel, volunteers, and support staff whose contributions ensured the success of the event.

The municipality also thanks all residents and members of the public who attended and supported the event. The strong community turnout highlighted the importance of recognising emergency personnel and strengthening cooperation between emergency services and the communities they serve.

ODM further congratulates all participating teams and winners in the firefighter challenges, with special recognition to the Overberg Fire and Rescue women’s team for winning the women’s division.

The municipality also commends the ODM Fire and Disaster Management team for the successful planning and hosting of a memorable and impactful event.

International Firefighters’ Day remains an important occasion to recognise the sacrifices made by firefighters across the world and to acknowledge the critical role they play in safeguarding lives, infrastructure, property and the environment.

The Cape Winelands District Municipality (CWDM) hosted the Fire Services Passing Out Parade at the CWDM’s Fire Training Academy in Stellenbosch on Friday, 08 May 2026. The event honoured 29 candidates from across the Cape Winelands, the South African Navy and Transnet who successfully completed the NFPA 1001 FireFighter II course; an internationally recognised qualification preparing them to serve and protect their communities.

On May 26, 2026, the Nippon Dynawave Packaging facility in Longview, Washington, became the site of the deadliest industrial disaster in modern Washington state history. The catastrophic structural failure of a massive chemical tank claimed the lives of 11 workers, injured eight others, who suffered burns and inhalation injuries, along with one firefighter, and triggered a complex, highly dangerous multi-agency emergency response. Just before 07:15am, an industrial storage tank holding roughly 900 000 gallons of “white liquor” failed catastrophically.

Thursday night’s operation on Table Mountain was one of those moments that leaves you humbled by the dedication, compassion and quiet heroism of this rescue community. By late afternoon, his wife became increasingly alarmed when multiple phone calls went unanswered.

13-year-old child died in multiple shack fire incident at Plastic View informal settlement, Pretoria The City of Tshwane Emergency Services Department responded to a multiple shack fire incident at Plastic View Informal Settlement in Moreleta Park late last night. Emergency Services received the fire call shortly before midnight and firefighting resources from Central, Silverton, Erasmuskloof and Mamelodi Fire Stations were immediately dispatched to the scene. Approximately 100 shacks were affected by the fire.

Ten people died following a head-on collision between a minibus taxi and a bus on the R39 between Standerton and Morgenzon in Mpumalanga early on Wednesday morning, 20 May 2026. The crash occurred about 5km outside Standerton, just before dawn, when the two vehicles collided. All fatalities were occupants of the minibus taxi, which included the driver. South African Police Service and emergency medical services responded to the scene, where multiple injured passengers were treated.

Two explosions rocked a barge on the North Shore of Staten Island in New York City in the US, injuring 34 firefighters and emergency medical workers. The explosion happened just before 15:30 on Friday, 22 May 2026, at May Ship Repair Contracting Corporation on the North Shore of Staten Island. At approximately 15h30 the FDNY responded to reports of a fire at 3075 Richmond Terrace on Staten Island. Units arrived within minutes and were met with heavy smoke, limited visibility and reports of workers trapped inside a confined space in the rear of the building.

Enthusiasts filled the Wesfleur Sportsground in Atlantis, Cape Town, on Saturday, 9 May 2026, to join City firefighters in commemorating International Firefighters Day. The annual event, hosted by the Fire and Rescue Service, gave visitors a look into the workings of the department, the staff and equipment. The commemoration started with a cavalcade through the streets of Atlantis and was followed by exhibitions, live displays, sport and games.

A fire tore through a dormitory at a girls’ secondary school in a town in Kenya’s Rift Valley overnight, killing 16 students, the government said on Thursday, 28 May 2026. The fire broke out just after midnight at the Utumishi Girls’ Academy Senior School in Gilgil in west-central Kenya and burned for more than two hours, Education Minister Julius Migos told reporters.

Fire Station No 4 is a contemporary emergency facility located on Avenida de Zaragoza in the Casetas neighbourhood of Zaragoza in Spain. Designed by the architecture firm IDOM, the 1 245-square-metre complex operates 24 hours a day to serve Casetas and its surrounding municipalities. Located on a publicly owned plot next to the Casetas municipal swimming pools, in a well-connected area, allows speedy emergency exits. Working 24 hours a day, this facility attends emergency situations that may occur in area 4, which includes the neighbourhoods of Casetas, Garrapinillos, Monzalbarba and Alfocea, as well as the surrounding municipalities, Utebo, Torres de Berrellén or Sobradiel, among others.

OroraTech, the global leader in space-based wildfire intelligence, today announced the successful launch and deployment of the Hellenic Fire System, four dedicated wildfire monitoring satellites for Greece, marking the world’s first national satellite system designed exclusively for wildfire detection and tracking.
